31 weddings later, we finally captured our last wedding of 2011, and it was a amazing finish.
I have been more than happy and thrilled to be part of Tracy and Patrick's wedding since the day I met them. Tracy has been sending us tremendous support and love day in and day out. It really means world to us to have couples like them (and probably that's why I got emotional when I finished their trailer last night).
They said "I do" at St. Margaret Mary in Naperville, and celebrated with all the guests, dancing the night away at Arrowhead Gold Clup in Wheaton.
It was an absoulte pleasure working with Tasha from Redwall Photography, and you can check her work here.
Our DJ was Matt from Your Night Production, and he made sure to keep everyone on the dance floor all night!

On a personal note, it's been one hell of year. I feel very blessed and lucky to be part of every single wedding this year, and I have to send huge thanks to our crew, Charlie, Eli, Nicole, Jimmy, and my lovely wife, Mrs.Orange.
And of course, I thank every single bride and groom who made our year simply amazing. We were just happy that we were there to celebrate one of the biggest day of your life.

In December, we were invited to Meyers Castle in Dyer, Indiana for beautiful wedding of Leah and Daniel.
Everyone was so welcoming and kind to us, and it made our work so much easier to capture such a wonderful event.
We worked with Christina from Cornerstone Photography and she was so wonderful to work with. All the staff including Lisa from Meyers Castle very supportive as well.

One thing that I always feel end of the wedding day is how fortunate we are to be part of beautiful wedding day. Just the fact that we are there, to capture the beginning of a new family means so much to us. We felt even stronger on Erin and Joseph's wedding day. Fall weather was just so amazing to have outdoor ceremony. They set the backdrop of the ceremony with purple and pink sky. Priceless, I'd say. Dance floor was full all evening, people enjoying themselves with some crazy dance moves and laughter. I can do it all over again any given day.

Ania + Tom | 10.22.2011 | Same Day Edit by Orange Wedding Film

Still craving for big Polish wedding, October 22nd couldn't come earlier. As soon as I woke up from Food coma from Dora and Paul's wedding, now it was time for Tom and Ania's big celebration.
These two love birds are simply adorable and so much in love. Absolutely fall in love with them at first sight.
It was very emotional day at both Ania and Tom's place as they got ready. Ania's voicemail to Tom, and Tom's letter to Ania, heartful blessing from parents of both side, and vows at the church... the list goes on and on.
I can't wait till we start working on reception portion especially since I stayed till end of the reception + additional performance of live band due to high demand from all the guests, it will simply so much fun to edit how the evening went!
It was great working with Glen from Glen Abog Photography and huge props to crew at Venuti's for helping us out with SDE presentation.
Enjoy the Same Day Edit that we played for the couple and guests during the reception, and once again, huge congratulations to Ania and Tom! Thank you for being awesome, you two.

1st day of October, what a great start of one of my favorite months of the year. When I stepped into Jacquelyn's room in Palmer House Hilton in downtown, I could feel the energy from excitement of this big day from everyone. Mike surprised Jacquelyn with awesome gift, and she did the same to Mike! Very emotional day had just begun!
They tied the knot at beautiful church 3 blocks from our studio, St. James Cathedral.
After taking great photos around downtown, we went back to Palmer House for reception.
Gold Coast Band of Prism Entertainment was super entertaining for guests, and super helpful and kind to us.

I can't thank enough Jacquelyn and Mike for having us there to capture their wedding day. Simply beautiful day, and hope you all enjoy the sneak peek!

Allison + David | 9.3.2011 | Wedding Film Trailer by Orange Wedding Films

"I couldn't ask for anything more". I start with that. The amazing chemistry between the couple, beautiful venue, awesome parents and bridal party, live band, and this wedding even squeezed in some extra H20. Yep. Rain. But it didn't stop anything. Allison and David was not kind of couple that rain could stop from having fun on their wedding day.
Their preparation for the big day was done at the Union League Club in downtown Chicago. The Reception took place at the same location, and Allison's mother played a huge role on decorating this amazing place!!! I was simply blown away by the details!
Dance floor was so full throughout the evening (as you can tell from the trailer!). Thanks to the band "the Front House". I also have to mention that it was great to see two couples that I was part of as a videographer a couple years ago!
The photographer was Oscar from S1 Photography. I can't wait to see some great images from them.

The wait is over! Dora and Paul's wedding film trailer from August is finally out, and I do apologize sincerely for the delay. This truly was one of kind wedding that me and my crew have done so far. Everyone at the wedding, starting earlier than 8AM till 2AM, knew how to enjoy themselves.
I started around 8:00AM at Dora's house where the table of food and drink (not a "tray" but a big table) was waiting for me and Paul from Freestyle Photo and other guests in the house.
We had several horse carriages and I was riding one with the couple on the way from the church to 1st banquet location, and it was very cool! The whole wedding was truly awesome experience, and I've never seen that many drinks and food in one day in my life.
There are so much fun and interesting things throughout the day, and it was very hard to put the trailer together without including too many shots! I am sure the full film and highlights are gonna be EPIC!
Until then, please enjoy this beautiful and unique wedding that we captured for simply wonderful couple, Dora and Paul!

Shelly + Neel | 8.25-27.2011 | Next/Same Day Edit by Orange Wedding Films

Food, music, dance, great people, awesome couple... 3 days in a row. What more can I ask? On top of that, I was able to share what I captured through my eyes with family and friends during the reception on day 3. So here is what my day was like starting Thursday till Saturday midnight. On Thursday, leaving my studio at 5PM, traveled to Chesterton, IN (2 hours with 1 hour of traffic caused by I-90 construction) at Shelly's parent's house for Mehandi night. It was so great to see many familiar faces from Sakshi and Manoj's wedding back in April! It was amazing experience watching mendhi being put on Shelly's arm and leg along with other ladies' hand. Singing and dancing continued throughout the night, and tons of food to eat! We also witnessed one of the cutest 5 year old boy who can dance better than most of us! Gotta see that on the full film! So I left their house around 10:30PM, went to studio, backed up all the files, then went home around 1AM. Woke up next morning, looking through footage from Thursday evening, and edit to start the next/same day edit. Then I left my house around 5PM to go to Downers Grove for Sangeet evening. Again, there were numbers of amazing performance (and some surprises by Neel's mad dance move!) and tons of food. I came back home around 11:30PM, backed up files, took a quick shower, then edited Sangeet portion till 3:30AM.
I woke up at 6AM to be at Westin in Lombard by 8AM to capture Shelly and Neel getting ready for their big day! Weather was just gorgeous which was perfect for baraat outside where Neel was riding on a horse carriage while his family and friends danced their way to entrance of the hotel for the ceremony. The decor and details at the ceremony was simply breathtaking. The beauty of decor continued on to reception! This one, I will make sure to add on the trailer (which will be released right before the DVD release). Those center pieces were the tallest that I've ever seen!
Always great working with Leo from Fragola Productions, and Raja was the DJ who did great job throughout the evening! And thanks to all the planners at the Westin.

Liane + Ron | 8.20.2011 | Same Day Edit by Orange Wedding Films

Early morning rain always makes nervous on the wedding day. Then again, I had a feeling that it would go away, just like it has been on last several wedding days. While Liane and Ron was getting ready for her wedding day at Hilton, Evanston, it didn't seem that rain was bothering them at all. It was very emotional ceremony from the beginning. We stopped by the park for the photo, and I had so much fun hanging out with bridal party! Andrew from John Andrews Photography was super easy to work with, and highly recommend! Reception was full of emotions and laughter, but I think our slideshow and Same Day Edit added a little bit more to that :-)
Working with Jeff from Tone Productions helped us so much with audio feed for SDE and coordinating the SDE timing. Also I've never seen a DJ like this before. He brought every single guests to the dance floor with ah-mazing(!) dance lesson and crowd control~!!! Best. Ever.
Reaction to our SDE from guests was just overwhelming, and made me realize why I put up with all the stress and obstacles to create a Same Day Edit for the couple and their guests.

I also have to thank my crew, Charlie and Eli for helping me throughout the day in various way to make this happen. I am very lucky to have you guys.
Awesome professionals, amazing couple, fun bridal party.. what can I ask for more?
I am a one happy event filmmaker.

Marie+Jeff | 7.22.2011 | Wedding Film Trailer

Earlier morning, dark cloud and heavy rain scared me, but it soon cleared out for Marie and Jeff;s wedding day! It was actually raining so hard, some cars were stopped on the side of the road because we couldn't see the road!!! With a slight delay on my end, I finally got to O'Hare where both Marie and Jeff was getting ready. I could tell Marie was a little bit nervous with schedule and some delays, but she picked up her camera and start taking some photos of people and her wedding jewelry (the 2nd shot from the trailer), I could tell she was getting more excited than nervous. We got to St. Bernardine in Forest Park for the ceremony. We drove around the city after the ceremony with the photographer Ian Dharma (who we worked with during Jenny and Leju's wedding last year!). I was able to capture very candid moments with Marie and Jeff, and I could see how much they are in love and happy to tie the knot!
Great day continued on back at the Holiday Inn top floor. Jeff's mother gave a very emotional speech which brought many people to tears. But soon after, she revealed some funny incidents of Jeff when he was younger :-)
Dance floor was full throughout the evening, and I have thank Maria and Jeff for such a wonderful day for us to be part of.

Erika + Kevin | 7.9.2011| Wedding Film Trailer by Orange Wedding Films

I am always nervous when I have not met the bride or groom before the wedding day, which is rare but still happens. However, I knew from emails and phone conversations with Erika, I knew she was an easy-going, laid-back person. Once I started shooting the preparation, I learned one more thing about her; FUN! She never stopped smiling and laughing (thanks to bridesmaids, and her mom) while she was getting ready, and those laughter continued onto reception.
I also want to mention that we got the biggest help from Chrissy from Big City Bride and her crew. Having professional wedding planners makes everything go so much smoother throughout the day!!!
Great working with Nick from Gerber and Scarpelli. DJ was Kristin from Toast+Jam, and thanks for all the help with audio feed!
Erika travels all around the world, so I hope Kevin and she will catch this awesome trailer in UK!

Jestene + Michael | 7.16.2011 | Wedding Film Trailer

I've known Michael since 2007. Michael's family was one of the first family that we got to know when my family moved from Boston a few years back. So needless to say, it meant a lot to me that I was there to celebrate his wedding with our lovely bride, Jestene. Weather was gorgeous throughout out the day, which helped me and Joshua tremendously for capturing beautiful images around downtown. And thanks to Joshua for introducing me to Jane Adams park. Absolutely beautiful location for photo shoots. Joshua and his crew from Joshua Albanese Photography was super easy and fun to work with. and I'd highly recommend him.
Also Jestene and Michael had something very unique at the reception. Instead of guests signing book, they had a board with their name and a tree painted where guests can make thumb prints with a little message next to it. I thought it was very cute and unique.
And how can we forget about the sweets table with amazing taste of snacks, which, by the way, was done by a company owned by Joshua's family!!
I couldn't be any happier being there for Michael and Jestene to celebrate their beginning of new capter.

Rosa + Giacomo | 7.2.2011 | Wedding Film Trailer by Orange Wedding Films

We started our July 4th weekend with Rosa and Giacomo’s wedding on Saturday, the 2nd. We united with Albert and Mike from SecondPrint Production once again to capture this amazing wedding. We received such a warm welcoming from Rosa’s family and friends at their place with a little brown bag that had all kinds of goodies (which was so nice of you guys!) Rosa’s dress and jewelries were absolutely gorgeous (one of the coolest shoes, ever), and Giacomo looked at his best! We walked into Queen of All Saints Basilica, and it was simply breathtaking. It was very emotional during the vows and ring exchange, and everyone was able to tell how happy they were to tie the knot. We moved onto Cantingy Park in Wheaton for the photo session, and I believe we set the record of number of bridal party with 24 people! The reception was held at Venuti’s in Addison, and the dance floor was filled with guests dancing and having so much fun. It was great to see Rosa and Giacomo having great time on the dance floor, too. Rosa and Giacomo made our work so much more enjoyable, and we felt so blessed to be part of such a great wedding. Huge congratulations to beautiful bride and handsome groom, Rosa and Giacomo!

Terri + Casey | 6.25.2011 | Wedding Film Trailer by Orange Wedding Films

I will just go ahead and say it. I’ve seen only a few couple that could have “this much” fun during their wedding day. Orange Wedding Films has been lucky to be part of countless fun weddings, but Terri and Casey really showed how it gets done! They even hooked me on LMFAO’s Party Rock Anthem that I’ve been shuffling listening to it everyday to start my day. It was our first time shooting at Prairie Productions, and lighting was absolutely beautiful to capture a wedding. Their decoration for ceremony and reception was simple yet gorgeous. Ceremony was fun with humor of the officiant and a reading by Casey’s uncle, and beautiful singing by Terri’s sister during unity candle ceremony. We also played their “love story” during the reception, and it was a great opportunity to share how Terri and Casey got to where they were. I strongly recommend all our friends to take a look at their a cute + wonderful story.

Erin + Mike | 6.18.2011 | Wedding Film Trailer by Orange Wedding Films

Lake Geneva. One of my dream locations to capture a wedding, and my dream came true on June 18th. Charlie and I drove up in the morning, enjoying the longer than usual wedding day, and getting excited about Erin and Mike’s wedding. Grand Geneva Resort in Lake Geneva is a very special place for them, and it was their dream to get married there. So that makes two of us, right? (or four..?)
I took my wife and kids to Lake Geneva for impulsive day off trip, and I absolutely fell in love with this place (you can watch the video here).
When Charlie and I walked into the salon where Erin and her friends were getting pampered, Erin was shouting at everyone saying “hey, everyone, this is JJ!!!” It certainly was one of the biggest welcome that we received. That pretty much set the tone of the day, and we were feeling nothing but love. At the hotel room, Erin set a small statue of Maria on the corner of table facing east for praying not to rain that day. Someone heard the prayer and answered right back with beautiful weather. They wrote their own vows that allowed us to learn a lot about their love. Very emotional and beautiful for sure. Everywhere we look was photogenic and I was like a little kid in the candy store with shooting details and the couple.
Reception was full of emotional speeches and fun ones, too. Dance floor was packed all night, and thanks to Mike from MDM Entertainment doing great job. Photo was done by Reuben from Fred Fox and he was great to work once more.
I want to also give a special thanks to Marlene from Grand Geneva Resort who was really sweet to the couple and vendors that day. I could tell she was more than a venue manager, but more like a friend.

Jennifer + Nick | 6.11.2011 | Wedding Film Trailer by Orange Wedding Films

My definition of Jennifer and Nick is “adorable”. Yes, they are beyond “cute”. When I asked them to be candid and be themselves during the photo session, they never stopped saying, “I love you” along with lots of hugs and kisses. I had to simply stand there and capture just the way they are. The church they got married was architected by Jennifer’s grandfather. I have never seen any church like that; clean dome shaped ceiling with so much beautiful details throughout the hall - breathtaking! Their reception was at Café La Cave. I believe that I witnessed one of the best + coolest father-daughter dance in my career. They also had a slideshow created by one of their dear friends that brought many to smiles and tears.

Christina + Josh | 6.10.2011 | Wedding Film Trailer by Orange Wedding Films

There is nothing better than seeing familiar faces during the wedding day. There are 3 other couples that we were happy to be part of their wedding day of 4th couple, Christine and Josh. They found us by Esther (matron and honor) and David’s wedding two years back when Christina was Esther’s maid of honor. They told me during final meeting 2 weeks before the wedding that there will be many cool little details during the wedding day including basketball for guest singing, mini-Tobasco sauce bottle for table number among others. I myself am a big basketball fan, so I thought it was such a cool idea to add some taste from groom side! We did their first look at the bridge in Naperville downtown park along with photo session. The sky helped us again with just right amount of cloud with no rain at all.
During ceremony, Josh seemed to hold himself quite well until he and Christina gave flowers and big hugs to each set of parents. I could hear many people sniffing and see many people wiping their tears. During the reception, they played the music video (created by MC, acting by the couple) which was absolutely hilarious and brilliant. Dance floor was full of awesome dancers including some b-boy action. I can’t wait to hang out with these friends again for next occasion.
It was awesome working with one of our all time favorite photographers, Albert and Mike from SecondPrint Productions. DJ was from Spinning Disc who played great songs for crowd to keep dancing on the floor.

Tiffany+Eric | 6.4.2011 | Wedding Film Trailer by Orange Wedding Films

We have been so blessed to capture so many blissful weddings this year, and we have done 12 so far. Tiffany and Eric's wedding was one of weddings that we realize once again why we do what we do. I just love the fact that our crew (including myself) was welcomed with such warm hearts and hugs, treated such from the beginning to end. When you see beautiful people, you wonder if they are beautiful inside as well. It sure was the case on this wedding. To be honest, I was intimated by Eric's height and fashion, but I soon learned that he is a down to earth guy with the warmest heart that comforted everyone around him (and he was quite goofy, LOL!).
I wish I can share more from their wedding, but y'all got to wait for highlights and full film!

It's always blessing to capture such a fun wedding with wonderful crew from SecondPrint Produtions. Makeup was done by fabulous crew from Sonia Roselli! Michelle and Ken said "I DO" on May 21st, and it was so much fun from start to end. Their tricks and games on grooms before Ken was allowed to see Michelle was one of the most bizarre and funny (from us, at least). Games that they played during reception was too funny I had to hold my camera steady from my laughing so hard. All have to wait for full film to watch the games, though, but here is the sneak peak from their wedding! Congratulations to Michelle and Ken. Thanks again so much for wonderful event!

Nikki+Matt | 5.21.2011 | Wedding Film Trailer by Orange Wedding Films

Nikki and Matt's wedding was very special to me personally in many ways. Not only because they are straight up cool, but I've already shot two of her bridesmaids' wedding (i wish it was 3, but we are booked for 3rd friend...) and they are simply one of the nicest+kindest yet most exciting couple that we've worked with so far. Nikki and Matt really love what we do, and we are more than happy to be part of their wedding. The day was so much fun and beautiful in every way.
They had their ceremony at Holy Name Cathedral (one of the most beautiful churches in downtown), and celebrated at Crystal Garden at Navy Pier. I know they are exciting and fun driven couple, and knowing what kind of music Nikki likes, i was focusing too much on hip and cool music for the trailer(knowing how important music for the trailer which directly governs storytelling). After 4 hours of music searching, I took a break, and decided to look at the footage before I went further with the edit. Then I remembered Matt's father giving a speech with a poem that he wrote. I found the perfect voice-over for the trailer. I cut the parts that I wanted to use, and played the music on the background (one of my all-time fav soundtrack), and music fit right in even before I edited the music accordingly. I went full speed with edit, and here it is. This trailer opened my eyes once more how important it is to create a trailer with unique story instead of just eye popping shots, and, me and Mrs.Orange really loved how it came out.
From the glimpse of party bus shot, you can tell how much fun we had that day (from the start till the end!), and I hope this trailer can tell you a glimpse of how awesome their wedding day was.
Big congratulations to Nikki and Matt. We miss you guys already. And of course missing Scott+Eileen, Nicole+Dereck a lot, too!!!

On April 30th, Orange Wedding Films crew and Fragola Productions collaborate 3rd time in one month to capture this wonderful couple, Amy and Irakil.
It was our first time capturing Georgian wedding and reception, and I have to say that it was unique and cool in every way. Food at the reception was nothing like what we had had before, and it kept coming out till we left!

Our new feature - "Short Film"

Orange Wedding Films has added a new feature called "Short Film Package" for rest of 2011 inquiries (1 spot left) as well as 2012 weddings.
My wife, Mrs.Orange, and I have been a big fan of short film format wedding films because "storytelling" is the main ingredient of short film, and it is not that easy to do.
When 4-5 minutes highlight film feels too short and 1.5 hour full film (with full ceremony + reception) feels too long, our new short film may be perfect to share with families and friends, or watch on your anniversaries. I expect the short films to be anywhere from 10-15 minutes, but it may vary depending how much we capture throughout the day.
Short Film can be added as a la carte for 2011 weddings that are booked already. Please contact me for more info on that.
My wife did most of editing on this one, and all I can say is I am extremely proud of her. Also let's not forget to thank the couple, Lori and Ross (and families and friends) for unforgettable + amazing wedding for us to be part of.

Laura + Brian | 5.14.2011 | Same Day Edit

Same Day Edit to me is very special because I know it will be even more special for the couple and all the guests at the wedding. It's not an easy process, I must say, but I love pushing the limit to create something great for people to share what happened earlier in the same day.
When Laura and Brian stopped by our studio last week to confirm final details of their wedding day, I knew it was going to be a fun wedding with people with warm hearts.
The day started with a little bit of rain, but not too much at all, but in the face of Laura and her friends and family, I could see nothing but smile and laughter. When Laura was walking down the aisle, I could see Brian biting his lips and his emotion through my LCD. The priest at the church was super cool (and very funny!) which always helps us capture the beautiful ceremony.
Reception was held at Cafe la Cave, and the staff treated all the vendors so well.
Followed by slide show that Laura and Brian created, we premiered the Same Day Edit, and for the first time, I actually looked away to see how the couple and their parents (+grand parents) reacted the SDE, and all I can say is, they reminded me why we do what we do.

Anisa + Jawed | 4.7 - 4.10 | Wedding Film Trailer

Anisa and Jawed celebrated their wedding throughout 4 days of amazing events. We were fortunate to be part of all of those days, and can not wait to put this full film together.
We also worked with Anisa and Jawed to produce a short (and load of fun) video to show to guests during reception, and every time we spent time together, we had so much fun. Anisa has 2 sisters and Jawed has 2 brothers, and they treated me and my wife (and my crew) like a family which is always extremely thankful. The video will be added to the blog post later today, so stay tuned. There were countless great moments, and it was tough for me to make a short trailer to represent all of those, but hope everyone can get a glimpse of them.
Also props to Z from Z Molu Photography all the way from Canada! His slideshow got mad props from the couple and guests during the reception! His work is amazing. Come check it out here

Zacuto EVF Beta Testing

Zacuto EVF

I am very happy that I got to beta test the new Zacuto EVF, and had opportunity to use it while I was shooting a wedding past weekend.
I always wanted better options for using DSLR’s for shooting weddings. I bought a couple of different monitors, and have been using Z-Finder exclusively since Day 1.
Now with Zacuto EVF, not only could I focus, set the exposure more accurately, it also allowed me to get some challenging angles that were not possible with my Canon 7D. . With purchase of Canon 60D last year, I thought I would not need any monitors or EVF because of swivel LCD, but EVF takes beyond what swivel LCD on the camera can do, which I will share more later.

First, here is what’s included in the box of the “Zacuto EVF Flip”. The box contains EVF unit with dust cover, LP-E6 Compatible Li-ion battery and a charger, swivel standard HDMI to mini-HDMI cable, ¼” 20 hotshoe mount, carrying pouch, lens cloth, and user manual. I just got the EVF Flip because I already own a Z-Finder. The price? $775. With Z-Finder EVF Pro, includes the flip EVF and Z-Finder 2.5x Pro),it’s listed at $1000. EVF Snap is listed at $675 ($805 with Z-Finder Jr.). Zacuto is known for its higher range on the price, but to be honest, I strongly believe these prices are very reasonable for the features and quality of the EVF. I won’t pick the specific model/make, but go ahead and research decent monitors (5”, 7”) with what Zacuto EVF offers, and how many options you have out there. After you read what this thing can do, you will understand where I am coming from.

First of all, as many of you saw the video, it can be dropped from 12ft and survive the shock. Its design reminds me of the RED camera, rugged corners, muscle looking exterior, and sure enough, it’s built to last.
It has a 3.2” LCD Display that’s so clear and crisp. You can compare side to side with on-camera LCD and you will see the difference. You won't be seeing those pixels through Z-finder. I am looking forward to calibrate the monitor via brightness, contrast, and chroma (saturation, red, green, and blue), so it looks closer to actual footage for the best results. It also has color bars for calibration with “blue only” display as well as monochrome.
Its resolution is 800x480 with image scaling. Now this is huge; No matter what your DSLR output you can manually scale them to meet your eyes’ pleasure via scaling up, down, position left, right, up and down, or position center. It will also show you the scaling like RV, AV, V scale, V pan, FL scale, and FL pan to be super accurate. It also has preset for 9 different DSLR cameras out there along with 4 manual preset that you can save for your own.I did preset 1 for 7D full screen, preset 2 for 7D with info, and preset 3 for 60D.
It has HDMI loop through which is also a great feature and I can’t wait to put this in real test with my other monitor. HDMI outlets are screwed into the body, so it won’t wiggle around like other monitors.
One of the biggest features on the Zacuto EVF is focus assist via peaking-3 different levels-and exposure assist (2 different levels of zebra that can be set manually). With pixel to pixel enable DURING the recording, this will help tremendously for achieving accurate focus. You can also flip the image for your shooting style.
There is also frame lines for 5 different frames (picture below) along with center cross and grid. Anamorphic correction is also available which will come handy for filmmakersAll those functions mentioned above can be set in a touch of button with 3 preset buttons (F1, F2, and F3). The EVF also has USB port, so in case of any firmware updates from Zacuto- you will easily be able to stay current on the features.
So how does all things above help me make better product? I personally shoot a lot of weddings myself, and some non-profit events along with interviews. When I shoot weddings or other events, time for setup and adjustments is very limited (referred as “run-N-gun” style). When I was looking to add gear tofor better viewing options on DSLRs, here are thethings that mattered the most to me; 1. LCD quality, 2. Durability, 3. Reliability, and 4. Price. Zacuto EVF meets all of those, and on top of that, the people at the Zacuto are just great to work with. They will listen to your needs and opinion about the product, and will do their best to improve the quality.
So back to my usage of this EVF during the wedding; I used it for a two day Indian wedding which included 4 hours of non stop shooting in the evening, and 15 hours of shooting the next day with a Same-Day-Edit lined up for viewing during the reception. One of things that impressed me the most was battery life. To be fair, I only used the battery that came with EVF, and it lasted all day long. On the 1st night, I was using it the whole 4 hours, and the battery still had a full bar. I, of course, recharged it overnight for next day usage, and it still had 3 bars at the end of the night. I used it during 1.5 hour ceremony, 45 minutes outside celebrations, and 3 hours of non-stop reception (plus 1 hr of open dance). I was very glad that I didn’t have to worry about the battery while I changed camera batteries for more than 5 times, and twice for H4N sound recorder.(full batteries both time). If you use 5D, 7D or 60D, you have same batteries anyway, so that’s one less thing to worry about.
Booting time is very fast, too (a lot faster than my H4N) which is very important for me. With Z-Finder Pro 2.5x, the image was very clear to my eyes, when I was using 100mm 2.0 during some performance first night, I had no problem with having sharp focus under low light situation.
Swivel HDMI cable is another “small” thing with a big advantage. I usually have two wireless receivershooked up to H4N along with headphones and VideoMic attached to the camera on my cage during the wedding ceremony and reception. So you can imagine all the cables going around the camera, with the swivel HDMI cable, I can either tuck it in or run it around other cables to save the hassle of tangled cables.

I personally shoot in many different ways throughout a 10-12 hour wedding day; low angle with slider, higher angle during dance, small space in the limo, etc. With the EVF angling pretty much any directions and positions out there, I was able to do some creative shots. Some awkward positions, like sitting on the floor for 20 minutes (picture below), I was comfortable shooting handheld with focus right on moving subjects.

Overall, I have nothing but good things to say about the Zacuto EVF. As an event filmmaker, DSLR’shas given me so much more ways to create beautiful images for our wedding couples. However, as we all know, DSLR cameras has their disadvantages as a video camera, and products like Zacuto EVF can make things a lot easier around those critical disadvantages.

PS. One more thing. People from Zacuto understand the industry. If you have unique project or setup for certain shoots, ask them for recommendation or suggestion. They will work with you and get you the best setup to accommodate with your need. Oh, and did I mention that most of their product have a lifetime guarantee?

Sakshi + Manoj | 4.23.2011 | Same Day Edit

The first same day edit of the year was done for Sakshi and Manoj's one unforgettable wedding! We did mixed some Sangeet footage from Friday to share some of the amazing performance and fun we all had the day before. Wedding day was full of great moments as well, and we were just so happy that we were able to share with the couple, family and friends during the reception.
It was projected on two 10ft screens on each side of the room, and we had many compliments and kind words from guests about the same day edit.
Photo was done by Leo from Fragola Productions, flowers were created by Yanni and DJ Raja rocked the evening.
Thanks to Sakshi and Manoj for taking a great care of us throughout the day, and I wish them the best! Congratulations!

Nimol + Tom | 4.2.2011 | Wedding Film Trailer

The very first wedding of the year has been posted! Yes. It's been too long since the last wedding, right?
I was very excited to be part of such a wonderful wedding as wedding #1 of 2011.

We are so grateful to work with such a great non-profit organization like March of Dimes. Orange Video Productions work with them 2-3 times every year for their charity events, and one of my favorite ones to shoot is this "Signature Chef Auction". Not only because of awesome food that they made on the spot, but more because of people's smile and willing to help for a good cause during the event. I was happy to see that most of footage was shot by us in Chicago, and the editor at March of Dimes did fabulous job putting them together. We will be working with them again in April, and hopefully another Chef Auction in later this year!

GUIDELINE for better wedding film (the difference that YOU can make!)

While I was working on new info packet for 2011 weddings, I decided to add some of guidelines that the couples can follow to help us make a better wedding film for them. After all, the wedding film belongs to the couple, and I want the best quality film for each of them. And they can HELP! Big Time!
So, here they are...

GUIDELINE for a better wedding film (the difference that YOU can make!)

1. Let your family and friends know that there will be cinematographers throughout the day to capture candid moments.
2. Tell them we are not another “videographer” but more of a filmmaker, and have them visit our website to see how we make wedding films.
3. When your makeup artist comes to your location, set up the table where there is plenty of daylight instead of under artificial lights (tungsten, florescent). Try to avoid basement location.
4. Avoid chewing gum at all cost. This goes for everyone in the bridal party and close family members.
5. Turn down the music while you are getting ready… I understand that some high-energy music can make you even more excited about your wedding day, but we won’t be able to capture some memorable natural sound.
6. Have some cushion time (30-45 extra minutes between moving locations or events). This will ensure that we capture every moments until very end without rushing out to get to the next location on time.
7. Notify the person who will be conducting your ceremony about our microphone AHEAD OF TIME (meaning days, weeks before the wedding day). We would love to capture their wonderful words at its best quality possible for “your” film (emphasis on “your” film). Most of them are used to wearing a small wireless mic anyway. We would be very happy if they can wear one extra just for you.
8. When you read or say your vow, make it heard, make it count. Don’t be shy! It’s your stage, you are the center of attention today!☺
9. When you light the unity candle, make sure to have some space between you two. Not only we like to capture the moment, but your guests would love to see it, too. Same goes for the ring exchange. Hold the ring with your thumb and index fingers and fold the rest of fingers inward, so people can see the ring.
10. Last but not least…. ENJOY IT! SMILE! BE HAPPY! There is nothing worse than capturing a frowning face of yours because of weather, or delayed flower delivery, or mean hotel staff… Let nothing get in your way to have amazing wedding day!!! We can not modify the facial expression on editing process, you know…

There are more, I am sure, but the couple have enough on their mind before/during the wedding day.
But here is my reason for above guidelines: You can expect what your wedding dress, cake, table decoration, etc is going to be like before the wedding day. You probably have very specific details and requirement for those things. Photo and Films, we don't know how the final wedding film is going to be like until after the wedding day. It's really up to how things are throughout the day, and the couple (and their family and friends) can, yes, CAN make the difference by paying (tiny bit) more attention to what we do. That is why I strongly recommend that couples introduce their wedding filmmaker/cinematographer's work via their website to family and friends.

Hope this helps both couples and fellow event filmmakers, and I CANNOT wait to start our 2011 wedding season!!!

Megan + Alec Same Day Edit

I hope everyone had awesome holiday season, and wish happy great new year 2011 to all our friends!
I apologize for the delay on posting this awesome piece. This is the last wedding that we capture in 2010. What a grand finale with a same day edit!
Megan and Alec is very much in love and sweet couple, and we could not have asked a better couple to finish up such an amazing year for Orange Wedding Films.
The ceremony was very unique because Megan's father was conducting the ceremony after he walked Megan down the aisle. We managed the slideshow that was created by Alec which was perfect bridge to our surprise same day edit for the couple and their families and friends. The dance floor was crowded throughout the whole night, and it was snowing so beautifully in the middle of night.

Julie + Ryan Wedding Film Trailer

This will be the last wedding film trailer of 2010. This year has been so awesome, and we could not have asked for a better job than capturing all the weddings of our brides and grooms. Julie and Ryan's wedding was the 2nd to the last wedding of the year (the detail of last wedding of the year coming soon...), and Debbie from 9.4 wedding was there as a brides maid, and it was so good to see her. Everyone was so welcoming us and happy for Julie and Ryan. It was snowing so beautifully, and couldn't resist capturing those white flakes wherever we go. During the ceremony, they read, as a married couple for the first time, the prayer that they prepared together. Reception was at Danada House which we also captured beautiful wedding last year. It was kind of days where I feel truly blessed to be able to capture the wedding day of this wonderful couple. It was also great to see Debbie + Tim, and Debbie's parents!
We were blessed to work with very talented Tony and Michelle from Life On Prints Photography. They were truly kind and awesome to us throughout the day.
DJ was Chris from Spin Productions helping us with audio feed and smooth + fun evening!
The biggest thanks to Julie+Ryan and their families+friends for having us at such a special day!

Megan + Jon Wedding Film Trailer

November 20th, Orange Wedding Film crew received one of the warmest welcome from our couple's house. Megan's parents were clipping stems off the bouquet of their daughter, and Jon's mother was putting boutonniere on Jon's jacket. Everything was going so smoothly throughout the day + evening!
Couple's friends and family were truly nice and kind, their warm welcome made us forget about chilly weather outside.
The reception was held at Hilton-Indian Lake Resort, and they had a little rock with guests' table number instead of ordinary table number cards. All the details on decoration was very unique and cool. The open dance floor was full through the whole night with people dancing, singing, and laughing!
It was also awesome working with Wen Wan from Wen Photos and looking forward to see great photos from her.

Tina + Luc Wedding Film Trailer

It was raining on November 13th, Saturday. It was raining a lot with thunderstorm. But it didn't take away smile and laughter from Tina and Luc. No way. Nothing was gonna stop them from tying the knot! Tina was full of energy until the end of night, and Luc seems he was enjoying every moments of the day.
With a slight of delay during the ceremony, everything worked out great, and all the detail, we could sense how much planning and hours were put into making this wedding happen. One of the highlights among beautiful details were hand made origamis table cards that were hung from the tree. All the names were written by Tina and origamis were made by her as well. (which gave me an inspiration of music choice for the trailer).
It was awesome working with Leo + Jimmy from Fragola Productions and some exciting new maybe coming next month or two (shhh...).
The flower arrangement and centerpiece was created by Bill's Grove Florist.
The fabulous makeup was done by Cecila Oh!

Lori + Ross Wedding Film Trailer

Guns n' Roses "Sweet Child o' Mine". A perfect song for.... FATHER-DAUGHTER DANCE!
Lori and Ross rocked their wedding. I don't know how else to put it. Lori surprised Ross with a brand new Gibson Acoustic guitar in the morning which had their wedding date engraved. I thought that was one of the coolest gift that I've seen (as me being a guitar lover, too!) Lori was so relaxed and simply having fun all morning with her girls. It was a little bit windy outside for photo shoot, and we had a great session with downtown on the background. The ceremony and reception was held in Architectural Artifacts. The location was extremely well lit throughout the entire day and night which was simply awesome. Everyone at the wedding was having so much fun, and we were so happy to be a part of it. Hair and make was done by Sonia Roselli crew. The photo was done by Peter from Peter Pawinski Photography (whom we worked with at Debbie + Tim's wedding!).
The event was coordinate by Lori from LOLA Event Produoctions and they were simply great to work with. Also the flower was created by Event Creative which was stunning!

Jennifer + Mike Wedding Film Trailer

On October 23rd, it was raining early in the morning. I could spot Jennifer's father looking out the window occasionally to see if dark cloud cleared out. Jennifer didn't seem to be stressed out too much, or maybe she knew it was going to clear out by the time she walks out to get married! It was great to see Heather and Ken (7.9.2010) in a brial party! Everyone was so friendly and extremely funny :-)
We saw "the best" groom dance walking up to the bride for garter (sneak peak at the trailer!)

Shahzeen + Prem Wedding Film Trailer

How Shahzeen and Prem met is truly amazing (check out their OrangE-Session!), and their wedding reception was beautiful as well.
They had the ceremony on September 11, and the reception was October 9th at Chicago Cultural Center which was absolutely gorgeous location for a celebration.
Photo was done by Lisel from Lisel Diesel Photo and she was simply awesome to work with (she was as dorky as I was, LOL!).
She also took engagement photos of the couple which were used in OrangE-Session as well.

"We don't call your wedding video a "VIDEO". Instead, notice how many people are calling it a "film" or "movie". Why? Simple. So called "wedding videos" have transformed into "wedding films" or "wedding movies" because event filmmakers (cinematographers) have raised the bar and really poured their heart and soul into each wedding that they capture. The new contemporary Filmmaker has reinvested in equipment and themselves to increase the production value of the films they create.
Some of our industry leaders have proven to us what's possible with the extra push on creativity, effort, and passion toward what we do.
Do you hear the word "video" in Hollywood? Not really. You hear "film", "movie", "DP (director of photography)", "cinema", and "cinematographers". Many elements make a wedding film cinematic, including but not limited to, music, camera movement, composition and lighting. Event filmmakers, have come a long way to call our work a "film" or "movie" because of the incorporation of tools and techniques.
Our brides and grooms (and their family and friends) appreciate our work more than ever. They appreciate the level of production value and the fact that it is an investment that appreciates over time. But it's important to understand what it takes to create a great "wedding film".
"Lights, Camera, Action!"
We have a "Camera" that we use to capture "Action" throughout the day and there is almost always one location that lacks "LIGHTS". You guessed it: the "RECEPTION".
The vision of a reception hall in many people's minds is romantic candle light, no ambient light, no spot light, just simple, romantic, dimmed all the way down, dark reception hall. Photographers use flash and even then they often tell me that if it's too dark, it makes it very difficult to focus.
Have you ever seen a movie set with no lighting? Probably not.
Venue managers and owners need to step up and help out the photographers and videographers on hand. We are not asking for full blown out hall, either.
When the dance floor opens to all the guests, they can dim the lights down all they want, but for introduction, speeches, cake cutting, first dance and the parent dance, we need to able to see something.
It's very important that brides and grooms discuss lighting with the venue manager during their consultation. I don't want to bother you before the grand introduction into the reception, and ask "can you tell your venue manager to turn up the lighting? They are not listening to anyone but you."
We will have to start bringing our own lighting system from this point on to avoid any conflict with venue managers and we much prefer the hall lighting was a little brighter than what we've seen in the past.
Let's make your wedding film a movie. Not just another old wedding video! Don't forget "Lights, camera, action!".

Jeremy + Carmela Wedding Film Trailer

During our consultation, I asked Carmela what her favorite band was. She answered "Dave Matthews Band." I pretty much knew right away that I have to shoot her wedding. I asked what else she liked to listen. Then she answered "the Frey". I instantly felt she was meant to be good friend of mine, and that was exactly how she treated me during her wedding day. I am always grateful for the way our brides + grooms treat us, but Carmela took care of us more than of herself that day. Jeremy was from New York, so I didn't have a chance to meet him prior to the wedding, but he treated us the same way Carmela did. Of course, the sun set was absolutely beautiful during a short photo session (due to chilly weather! burrrrrr!) Reception was small, but filled with dance and laughter.
Thank you guys so much for being simply awesome.

On September 24 + 25, we captured Constance and George's wedding ceremonies + reception. I've never met the couple before, and I was very anxious to see them in person for the first time. Based on organized schedule and a couple of phone calls, I knew they would have awesome personality! Sure enough, their 1st day of cultural ceremony was filled with unique rituals and colors and food throughout the evening, and 2nd day of Christian ceremony and reception took place at Stan Mansion with Orange lights shining the stage.

Dana + Mike Wedding Film Trailer

To best describe the wedding of Dana and Mike would have to be the word….love. The love in their eyes, the love spelled out in different languages to the love candy dish in the end.
The ceremony took place in Villa Park at St. Alexander Church. A white Bentley was waiting for the bride and groom after the ceremony. That lovely ride took them to Arrowhead Golf Club in Wheaton. Too kick off the dinner, a Mariachi band played for the bride and groom. This music brought the bride and her Father to tears!! Great speeches and dancing capped off the night dedicated to love!
The photographer was Lin, Photography by Lin, and she was excellent to work with! Best of wishes for the happy couple in love, Dana and Mike! Thank you guys so much!

Melissa + Dan Wedding Film Trailer

On September 18th, many meaningful events happened. First, this was our last day with double booked wedding (yes, I get to be with you all brides+grooms from this point on), and guess when Melissa and Dan decided to have us for their wedding: last year MARCH. Yep, 18 month ago. They were one of the very first couples that booked us. It means a lot to me personally to see them again 18 month later, and we've come a loooong way.
You can check out their "Save the Date" video that we made, um, one year ago!
Me and Eli drove up to Milwaukee, WI for their prep at the church. They had many brides' maid and groomsman filled of fun personality!
There were so many cute details that I couldn't even put on the trailer, so I can't wait till edit the full film!
The photographer was Heather from Heather Cook Elliott Photography and she was so much fun to work with!

Kim + Kevin Wedding Film Trailer

Kim and Kevin was ready in the morning at their house getting ready for very busy day, starting with tea ceremony, then photo session in downtown, ceremony, then reception.
Everything was running smoothly, and all the vendors were awesome to work with. The photographer was from MI, and her name was Kara Purtell. We had fun shooting this awesome couple around the downtown.
Reception was full of fun with speeches and live band. We also played "Thank You Video" (check it out, embedded below the trailer), and saw many teary eyes among the guests. When I was working on it, I myself almost teared up while working on it because I could see their appreciation through their words.
Best of luck to Kim and Kevin, and of course, their adorable son, Ethan. I was glad to see Ethan came out later to put his groove on the dance floor :-)

Carmen + Alan Wedding Film Trailer

Early start on September 11th with Mrs. Orange as our cinematographer, we drove to Alan's house, dropped her off, and headed to Carmen's house. It was 7AM. Thank God for no wedding on Friday, I would've been really tired. We started the groom's game at Carmen's house around 9AM: starting with Wasabi roll and Seaweed passing! So much more, you just have to wait till you see the full film.
Their reception was at Navy Pier Crystal Garden with perfect sunset and skyline on the background.
Photo was done by Milli from Millicent Wong Phogoraphy and she was very pleasant to work with.

Debbie + Tim Wedding Film Trailer

September 5th. The word of the day was "smile".
I've never seen a bride smiling and enjoying her day this much, which put smiles on my face all day and night. It was 3rd wedding of that week, but as soon as I saw her and her family greeting me, I felt like it was the 1st wedding of the season!
Tim was down to earth awesome to work with.
Their church was round shape which was very interesting and cool!
The photographer was Peter from http://weddings.peterpawinski.com/ and was great to work with.
Even though it was raining a little bit in the beginning of the photo session, no one was frowning or complaining. We went ahead and took some awesome (and some hilarious) photos until the very end.
Everything went so smoothly and we had tons of fun.

new Canon EOS 60D quick review

I ordered a new Canon 60D from pictureline.com in Utah.
I haven't shot any with the camera yet, I am planning on using a lot for 2 weddings this weekend.
I will be surprised if you can tell the difference between 7D footage and 60D footage.
Swivel LCD is definitely the best feature of this camera.
The price is between 7D and T2i, but what this camera has to offer is a lot closer to 7D: having K-Temp WB, Battery info, and same battery as 7D and 5D. I am sure I will find out more about the camera, but as for the 1st impression, I would give 9 out of 10 for now.

On August 28th, Megan and Michael tied the knot at Rose Garden in Buckingham Fountain, and head out to Willis Tower for reception!
Weather was beautiful with plenty of sunlight for the outdoor ceremony, and the reception was full of cute little details and awesome food.
I could see so many people having tons of fun at the photo booth, and myself and Mrs.Orange took a few snaps as well!

My crew members were simply amazed by the performances and energy during the reception.
Yes, I have to start with that sentence right there.
Watch the trailer and you will see what I mean.
I've never seen anything quite this spectacular in any wedding! Amazing performance by friends+family, but by the bride and groom? It was simply amazing exprience going through the footage, I can not wait to put together the full film and the highlight film for this amazing wedding.
I knew Melanie and Andy's wedding will be filled with fun from when I met them. We were all heart broken that I won't be able to be there for their wedding, but our crew did great job (once again!) capturing one of the most memorable weddings that we've captured so far.

Gear stolen at church before the ceremony.. Be careful, everyone!

So, it's 9:30 AM on Monday, and I am sick again. Thank God I was at least feeling better during the weekends to allow me to capture some awesome couples' wedding. Past week was pretty tough on us in various reasons. I knew this week will get only tougher, so I was preparing mentally. Then this incident took place...
Yesterday, while I was traveling with the couple in the limo for the photo shoot around the city, I sent my 2nd shooter straight to the church (which is normal routine for us, whether it's church or reception). When he got there, there was a service taking place because he was there too early. So he took some exterior shots of the church, and went inside, put the gear bag on the back corner where he wouldn't disrupt the service. Since there was still doing a service, he decided to step out and go to parking lot (which was literally outside of the door), and bring back his water bottle, and then talked to his GF on the phone for about 3 minutes. He saw people walking out, so he decided to head back in to grab some detail shots and interior shots. When he got to the bag, the bag was opened, and some of our gear was missing. Here is the list: Canon T2i with battery grip with Canon brand batteries, Sandisk 32GB SD card (with some footage from bridal prep), Sigma 24-70 f2.8, and Sigma 70-200 f2.8... He didn't take another 7D with Tokina 11-16 probably because he couldn't figure out how to release it from our tripod. I was 3 minutes away from the church on the way back from the photoshoot in the limo. When he called me saying that he is not joking or anything (he loves to joke around with me. ALOT), my heart dropped... wishing it wasn't true...
We are fully insured, but that wasn't the problem. How about the some footage there? How are we going to shoot the ceremony in this huge church (yeh, it had a loooooong aisle)? How are we going to shoot the reception??? My heart ached. My sickness seemed hitting me again with nausea and headache.
After we informed the couple, the photographer kindly lend us one of their lenses 35mm (which was still better than my 28mm) for up front angle. With limited focal length, we did our very best to capture the ceremony and reception.
Long story short, we survived the night with 2 cameras and 3 lenses.
I tweeted and updated the statues on Facebook. I am so grateful for all the friends who offered me to let me know borrow the lenses or cameras for the night, even one of my Facebook friends that I have never met offered me 2 batteries for T2i for free. Even my role model/hero/inspiration left a note, too. Thank you all again for great support. You all made me keep motivated and encouraged throughout the night.
Wedding was awesome, and everything went great.
So! What did we learn today?
First, do not leave your gear unattended too long if at all. Even at the church! I don't blame my crew because I have done the same thing sooo many times, I know you guys probably have, too.
Second, if there is some other service or ceremony taking places, put your gear away from it. I doubt if there were some guests from our wedding, it would much less likely stealing could have taken place (as they know that could jeopardize the wedding that they are attending).
Third, insurance, insurance, insurance. With WEVA discount, I am not paying too much per year for decent coverage. If I wasn't insured, it was close to $3000 loss right there...if not more with shipping and taxes. I have an E-Session this afternoon, and 2 double booked weddings this weekend. There is no way that I can cover those lost equipment in 4 days.

I still have 12 more weddings to go, and tons more years to come. I will take this lesson and be a lot more careful with our gear. This could have been a lot worse, trust me. I never thought this sort of things would happen to "ME"!!! You all are thinking the same thing, right? No. It could happen to anybody, including you!!!
So be careful out there. Stay alert at all time.

Kaylie + Tony Wedding Film Trailer

Another successful weddings on August 21st (we had 2 weddings that day), and let's start with Kaylie and Tony's wedding!
Kaylie's apartment was full of energy and beautiful bridesmaid getting ready, God bless natural lighting filling her space. Tony was relaxing with his boys back at the Westin hotel until they traveled to the city to meet his future wife!
Reception was held back at Westin, and it was blast from the start to end!

Cecilia + SeungJae Wedding Film Trailer

On August 20th, Friday, at the same place as President Obama tied the know with the First Lady, Cecilia and SeungJae celebrated their wedding day!
We've met Cecilia at Jason and Michelle's wedding back in November, and she wanted to book us for her wedding day!

It was very challenging and difficult work, and I don't know how some of you guys do it so often...
Great props to my crew members, Nicole and Charlie!
No color correction, this is pretty much how it was played during the reception.
You may see on the "reaction" video, but I tricked the couple and guests by "broken" segment of last part of slideshow in the beginning of the video to make it even more "surprised" and "unexpected".

Maurine + Linus Wedding Film Trailer

Hello, all? It's been a while since our last wedding film trailer... with shooting wedding during the weekends and getting the Wedding Film DVDs out of studio (and working with HDSLR community), I have been a little behind of everything last a couple of weeks! I finally got a chance to work on Maurine and Linus' trailer, and it came out so cool! Everything was so unique and cool from the start; with awesome looking shoes, a bouquet which I've never seen anything like that in my entire life! Everything turned out great that day with awesome weather, awesome couple and wedding vendors.
Priti from Samaya Events has been a great help from the start of the planning with Maurine, and finished very well at the end of the night. Photo was done by Dawn and Kelly from Dawn Roscoe Photo and they all were awesome to work with. We had an opportunity to go up to glass wall on top of Willis Tower.. The couple were excited, but I was afraid to look down... or I was focusing on nothing by the filming the amazing view :-P

On July 18th, it was yet another new experience for Orange Wedding Films crew with a beautiful Orthodox wedding. I have met with Dn. Zachariah a couple of times before the wedding for slide show production and schedule, and I knew things would go very smoothly throughout the wedding day. Samar + Haider Wedding Film Trailer

During the consultation few months back, Samar explained and described what her wedding was going to look like. On July 17th, when I stepped into her prep location, her awesome dress was exactly how she told me, and all the details at reception location was beyond my belief how awesome they looked (just as how she described).
You will have to wait to see the full film and highlights to view all the amazing things Samar and Haider had on their wedding; from French Modern decoration, Cigar roller, and crazy performers from overseas!

Fun, fun, fun! That's all I can say about Bridget and Alan. There are so much write about their wedding day! Starting with hot red shoes+garter of Bridget (not to mention her beautiful dress!), ring box that Alan proposed her (very first shot), running a marathon to the goal line with their running shoes on! Reception full of dancing, tears and pure fun... I simply can't wait to put these all fun things together and produce the full film and highlights (with, of course, their favorite song "I Gotta Feeling" by B.E.P!!). QUICK Wide Lens Comp Photo

So, I received Tokina 11-16 f2.8 for the weekend from www.lensrentals.com. By the way, their service is great! Def. recommend.
Since I have only 7D+T2i (with crop sensor), not 5DmkII (with beautiful full sensor), I have to carefully choose the wide angle lesnes. I have owned Canon 24-70 f2.8 L, but never quite felt it was wide enough. So I bought really cheap EF-S lens (18-55 f3.5-5.6) lens just to see the difference. Quality-wise, it's a junk for video. For the photo, maybe it's OK, but for the video recording, I really dislike the quality, but again, it's cheap, what do you expect? Anyway, so I took quick snap shot of my editing room (that I spent about 20 hours per day), and compared side to side. Hope this helps.

I know our turn around is usually a week to 10days, but with all the wedding that we shot last 2-3 months, things are extremely busy in Orange Studio.
On July 9th, we were invited to film Heather and Ken's wedding at Eaglewood Resort in Itasca for their beautiful outdoor ceremony and reception at the ballroom.
Our "first meet" at the lobby was as emotional and joyful as vows and ring exchange during the ceremony. The weather was absolutely gorgeous during the ceremony as well.

Sarah + Ali Wedding Film Trailer

On July 2nd, Sarah and Ali had a traditional ceremony to tie the knot, and on July 3rd, they invited all their friends and families for such a wonderful occasion!

I had a chance to ride a limo with the bridal party, and boy, it was crazy fun...

Joyce + Jun Wedding Film Trailer

"Nice".... that's the word of the day on June 20th wedding of Joyce and Jun.
Everyone was so welcoming and nice to us. No drama, no rushing... just simply "nice".
It made us feel so at ease which helped tremendously to capture such a wonderful wedding from the beginning to the end. I found out a lot about Jun that day... He likes classic rock & roll (Guns&Roses, in particular), and we actually share our "the" favorite Korean artist, Seo Tae-Ji. Joyce was so beautiful that day, and Sonia Roselli did an awesome job on Joyce's makeup. Photo was done by Wayne from Wayne Yuan Photographer. Joyce's mom made such a great impression on me as a parent (thought she was Joyce's sister! So did my wife while watching the footage!) raising three wonderful daughters. Nhikkie + Dee Wedding Film Trailer

What a early start on the day of June 19th! Nhikkie and Dee had a long but very special day ahead of them when I saw them at 8:30AM. They had 2 tea ceremony at each parents' house, then off to downtown for photo shoot+intimate ceremony, then off to Furama uptown.
I knew it was going to a fun wedding based on what I expreienced from their save the date session (http://vimeo.com/7544233).

Kathleen + Mark Wedding Film Trailer

We have been very fortunate to capture Kathleen and Mark's wedding on June 18th, Friday. We had great start of the day, and awesome ending of the night. Yes, there was some rain, thunderstorm and lighting during and after the ceremony, but by the time we came back to reception location, sky cleared out and gave us golden hour with perfect lighting for photo and filming.
Make up was done by Sonia Roselli and photo was done by Danielle from Danielle Aquiline Photography.

Crystal + Vu Wedding Film Trailer

You can only dream about marrying your first crush in elementary school, right? Nope. Not the case for Crystal and Vu. They share some fun/unique love story, and after long years in love, they finally tied the knot in June 12th. When I was listening to the story told by the reverend, I could not stop smiling at how cute the story was. We took the trolley after the ceremony to take some photos at the elementary school that they went together, and it was very fun!
Reception was full of fun dances, and shots, shots, shots, shots.. and more shots...

Megan + Jeremy Wedding Film Trailer

On June 5th, Megan and Jeremy got married, and Orange Wedding Films was there to capture all the detail, emotion and joy throughout the day!
Preparation of Megan and reception took place at William Tell in Countryside, and had ceremony at St Christopher Church in Midlothian.
The topper of the cake was very unique (watch the trailer to find out!), and it was so much fun throughout the night during the reception with tons of dancing and laughters!

Natalie + Allon Wedding Fillm Trailer

May 30th. Two awesome people tied the knot. Natalie was absolutely gorgeous with simple yet elegant dress. Allon looked sharp with his suit with hint of purple color.
The ceremony and reception was taken placed at Chicago Contemporary Art Museum which was filled with cool art pieces.
The weather was perfect for the outdoor ceremony, which was warm yet cool with a little breeze.
The photo was done by Dean from Thorsen Photography. He took some cool photos of our crew, too. His work is awesome, so make sure to check out his blog!
I wish I have known the florist as well, because their flower and detail was great, too.
The couple should have been back from their 2 weeks honeymoon by now, so here it is!

Nicole + Derek Wedding Film Trailer

We were meant to capture the wedding of Nicole and Derek on May 29th.
They came around full circle (a long, but funny story) to finally decide to have us to film their wedding, LOL! We had Eileen and Scott (Jan 2, 2010) and Nikki and Matt (May 21, 2011) at the wedding and both ladies were bride's maid! It's always awesome to see our past brides and/or future brides at the wedding that we are shooting!
Everything was going flawlessly throughout the day, and Nicole and Derek took a good care of our crew. It was also nice to work with Chad and Michelle from Husar Photography again. They are very professional and fun to work with!
We captured some extremely funny/cute moment during dancing, but you would have to wait for the full film!

Kristen + Josh Wedding Film Trailer

Sarah + James Wedding Film Trailer

On May 22nd, we drove about an hour or so out to Plainfield to capture the wedding day of Sarah and James. The weather was beautiful and perfect for outdoor ceremony. The ceremony was held at Settler's Park. During the ceremony, there was a short story read about Sarah's late mother, and as soon as the story was done, dandelion started flying everywhere... it was truly emotional moment for all of us who were there.
Both Sarah and James was super relaxed and laid back, and we ended up having so much fun till very end of the night. The band they had played some bad a** tunes throughout the night.

Gayle + Edward Wedding Film Trailer

On May 16th, Orange Wedding Films captured Gayle and Edward getting married at the Westin Hotel in Lombard. Exactly 360 days ago, I shot my 3rd wedding here, and gave me time to think about how far Orange Wedding Films has come. They had their "first look" before the ceremony in the lobby witnessed by both parents and entire bridal party which was very cute! The flower and all the decoration was done by M&M Special Events. Ceremony and reception was taking place without any hitch (thanks to Adel from Oliveaire,everything was running so smoothly, and it was a huge help on us to wrap up our 4 back-to-back weddings that weekend. Maggie + Mike Wedding Film Trailer

This wedding was one of rare cases where I have never met the bride and groom, but as soon as I walked into Maggie's prep location (Wit Hotel), everyone gave me warm welcome and offering me refreshments. Maggie was very relaxed, and smiling throughout her preparation process, and so was Mike.
Ceremony and reception was held in the Adler Planetarium in downtown Chicago, and it was GORGEOUS!!! Everything went so smoothly, huge thanks to Charlene from Sweet Chic Events. Charlene had talked about the wedding day and all the planning with us ahead of time, which helped us tremendously to be able to capture the moment without any surprises.
Makeup was done by Lillian Toma from Starlight Makeup
Photographer was Brian from Grey St. Photography and he was awesome to work with as well! Can't wait to see the photos.

Lady May + Ryan Wedding Film Trailer

Last weekend, we captured total of 4 weddings and every single one of them was truly unique and amazing!!! As a start up of trailer marathon from last weekend weddings, here is the trailer of May and Ryan's wedding!
They tied the knot at Old St.Patrick's church on Monroe St, and it was one of most restricted churches we have shot so far, which gave us tons of challenges to shoot the angles we wanted. Other than that, the light was beautiful inside of church, and there was lots of emotion throughout the entire ceremony.
The reception was held at Hyatt in Schaumburg, and they surprised their guests with a choreographed first dance!

Doan + Daniel Wedding Film Trailer

Orange Wedding Films had back to back wedding last weekend, they both turned out to be truly amazing weddings. On May 1st, Doan and Daniel tied the knot, and we were there to capture all the details, emotion, and moments. On my to church after capturing the couple's "first reveal" on the staircase at the hotel, I could map out the trailer in my head how it should lay out, and the trailer came out 99% close to what I was thinking. We can't wait to premiere the full film and short film for the couple, family and friends.
The hair was done by Livia Caporale, the reception was held at Renaissance hotel in Schaumburg. It was great to work with the photographer Leo from Fragola Productions.

Alicia + Scott Wedding Film Trailer

We filmed Alicia and Scott's Wedding and it was one of "the nicest" weddings that we have filmed. Everyone was taking good care of our crew, and everything was going so smoothly throughout the day. Ceremony and reception was held in William Tell in Countryside, and it was our first outdoor wedding this year. The precipitation was 80% 2 days before, but it dropped down to 20% on the day of. It did rain A LOT starting around 9PM, but for their ceremony and photo session, it was pretty outside! Even during the ceremony, it was a bit windy with grey clouds above us, but not a single drop came down. Reception was full of surprises (wait for the full film!), and the father of the bride came to our table himself to make sure we got food and drinks. Awesome families and friends! Stunning bride, awesome groom, perfect wedding! Congratulations to Alicia and Scott. Enjoy the trailer!!!

Jennifer + Martin Wedding Film Trailer

On April 17th, we were fortunate to capture the wedding day of Jennifer and Martin.
The weather could not have been any better. It was simply gorgeous all day to evening.
What really surprised me and Charlie was that everything was running so smoothly and nicely. Everyone was checking up on us (especially Jennifer and Martin), and things was on the schedule most of time, which is, by the way, hard to experience during any given wedding without a planner.
The ceremony was held at Bond Chapel in UIC, and the reception was at Beverly Country Club. They had a band named Gentlemen of Leisure Band who were just amazing with full brass and 6-7 singers. Robin and Amanda from Riverbend Studio was awesome to work with, whose assistant was the photographer from last weekend wedding! Small world!

Orange Wedding Films shot our very first Greek wedding, and it was truly unique experience. At any given time, there was music, there was food, there was dancing, and there was excitement. The weather was amazing throughout the day.
The reception was held at Cotillion in Palatine which was beautiful.

Canon EOS 7D vs T2i comparison

So Here it is. Canon EOS T2i. 1/2 of price of 7D that shoots HD video, just like 7D.
I will cut to the point.
T2i is a good video camera. If you are ready to step into HDSLR world, go ahead. Get one. However, because I have used 7D for last 4.5 months or so, I'm quite used to shooting video with 7D. If you have never used 7D before, I think T2i will be just fine.
Here are some main differences (some of them mentioned in my video) between these 2 cameras. I stayed strictly in "Video" usage comparison. Due to time limit, no still photo comparison at the moment.

Weight/built material: 7D is a winner on this. Its weight is just about right to have some weight for steady handheld shots. T2i seems a bit too light. I am sure this makes almost no difference on tripod, but for the handheld, it was like shooting Canon XH-A1 and HV30. 7D should be more weather protected than T2i. No question.

Button layout: it's video friendly. slightly different from 7D, but not that bad.

Display: very similar to each other. no biggies here.

input/output: no deal-breaker for video use. T2i lacks flash line which doesn't matter for video use.

ISO: 7D has more variable ISO settings. T2i has limited setting. They both still go up to 6400. Would it make too much difference? Not for me since I always stick with 100,200,400,800,1600 or 3200, which is pretty much what T2i has.

White Balance: big drawback (at least to me) was T2i does not have an option to white balance by K temp. Only preset setting or custom (which could be pain in the a**)

Image quality: gotta see the video to be able to tell. And I apologize ahead of time for shooting only "not so interesting" stuff today. I am feeling a little bit under the weather and don't want to be outside for long. But more interesting stuff will come soon.

LCD: very clear on T2i. My Z-finder seems to fit right in. I will know this for sure when I get my 2nd Z-finder for T2i, but seems to have very similar size of 7D. Zacuto Z-Finder webpage has a special instruction for it, but no biggie.

Battery/charger: it's new type of battery on T2i. I just ordered 2 more from Calumet. The charger is different, too. 7D has no cable connection to the outlet, instead it has collapsible 2 prongs sticking out on back of charger while T2i charger has attachable cable to the outlet. I prefer no cable, but it may become handy in small space outlet.

So. Am I going to toss 7D away and get another T2i? NO.
Am I going to return T2i and get another 7D? NO.
I would still feel more comfortable having 7D around, but I see absoutely no reason not to buy T2i as your first HDSLR camera (for the video use, of course).
I personally like 7D because it's slightly bigger, heavier and weather-resistant.
But T2i can be my 2nd camera for sure. No more playing with XH-A1s to match color and pixel ratio (which does take time when exporting).
I would personally avoid kit lens. I got the kit lens with 7D and never found a use of it. Have been trying to sell it, but no one seems to be interested.
I personally enjoy using 24-70MM 2.8 L lens for 7D, and I am going to get EF-S 17-55MM with IS for T2i. Zacuto gear is what I use: Z-Finder, and Rapid Fire. I believe Z-Finder is "a must-have" for HDSLR. People are crazy about shallow depth of field on these HDSLR cameras. But with looking at your LCD with your naked eyes, this could work against you. You have to have sharply focused object for best quality image with your HDSLR. Especially for event filmmakers, where people are almost always moving around throughout the event (preparation, photo session and dancing?!?!), Z-Finder will save your life when facing challenge with focusing. If you are going fully HDSLR (no regular video camera), get audio recording device. I have H4N. There are a couple more different ones out there, but please get one. It's a necessary tool for clean audio. If you want steady shots, get a stabilizer of some sorts. I have Sachtler Soom system and Zacuto's Rapid Fire. Since HDSLR camera's main purpose is still-photos, they didn't design the camera with video users in mind. It's very challenging to hold one and shoot very steady for a long time. Some type of stabilizers will be very helpful, especially in run-n-gun type shoots.
So here is the short comparison video between 7D and T2i.

I tried my best to compare 7D vs. T2i because many people want to know if T2i can perform video shooting as well as 7D. I tried to compare those two cameras side to side. I didn't have enough time to do all the tests I wanted: 24P, 30P, 60P, different colored objects, etc, etc. It's cold here in Chicago and I have been sick since yesterday. So I will go out and shoot some more when I (and weather) get better. Our 1st wedding (Indian Traditional wedding) is in March 19th. I will be most likely shoot that wedding (and beyond) with 7D and T2i. So I will have a lot to share then.

[IN]FOCUS 2010 by JJ Kim

2010 is off to a good start. Wait, 'good' is not good enough to describe the feeling that I have for beginning of this year. How about 'great,' 'awesome,' 'amazing,' 'incredible,' or 'unforgettable?' These are some words that I would use to describe the presenters, new friends that I made, the atmosphere throughout days and nights, the people who put this gathering together, and last, but not least, "how I feel about myself and my business."

The title, "[IN]FOCUS," was how I felt after I came back to Chicago. I was [IN]FOCUS about how to make my wedding/event films in 2010 and beyond, I was [IN]FOCUS about how to manage my projects (so that I can spend a little more time with my wife and kids), I was IN[FOCUS]about learning how to connect with other people even if we were from 50 different states and several countries, and more. So I have changed a lot since I got back however, here is one thing that has not changed with me.
My philosophy:
It has always been "Providing the best quality films to all my clients......
Every Single One of them."
And it looked like that's what other filmmakers that I met had in their mind also, whether they were presenters, staff or attendees.
I am not going to touch on each sessions since I don't want to spill the beans and expose everything; you gotta go to this gathering if you are interested! I can tell everyone that it was great and I learned a lot, but can't give all the details from each session.
I usually try to capture everything in my camera; always try to find a unique angle, try to capture any cool moments, try to capture each person's face who was there....
Not this time, though. I wanted to remember everything from this event, but I wanted to spend more time learning... and yes, have a good time.
I attended a video seminar/workshop once before, and there were more sessions, more vendors, and more attendees. Sorry to say, but I learned more from [IN]FOCUS. Maybe I was shy then (being a first timer on any type of big seminar like that for videographers/filmmakers), but I got to connect with so many great (and fun) people at [IN]FOCUS.
One of the biggest highlights from it was that I got to meet with one of my personal inspirations, personal hero, at this gathering. When I first stated Orange Video Productions, I thought, 'Am I ever going to be half as good as him?' 'Did I get into the right business here?' It kind of started like that, but after a couple of days of depressing and doubtful moments, I picked myself up (thanks to the support from my beautiful wife) and thought "I will never copy what he does, but I will work and study hard to create some kick-ass films that inspire people, just like how his work does." It meant a lot to me to meet with him in person and get a chance to say thanks to him. I hope he remembers me saying that as we were walking through downtown Austin looking for our 5th stop for more beer with about 20-30 people.
3 days felt short, 24 hours per day felt short; but that's what makes me look forward to the next one. Whether it's going to be another [IN]FOCUS in 2011, WEVA, or even Re[Frame](-->never been to this one, but would love to attend), I will not be shy to talk and meet with new people and share my love and passsssssion (yes, with 7 S's).
I have to say "Thank you" to Don, Chris, Joe and Terry, and Julian (whom I didn't get to meet, but still a huge thanks to him from my heart). And all the presenters who took their own time to prepare great presentations to all of us, huge kudos and props to you all. And to all of my friends with whom I got to hang out and made [IN]FOCUS 158% more fun, I miss you all. To all who didn't get to say "Hi," we have the next one coming up (right?!)and let's make sure we get to hang out.

In closing, my father has always told me, "When you study, study as hard as you can. When you are having fun, have fun as much as you can". I think I finally did what he has told me to do for 32 years.
And the biggest thanks to my lovely wife, who helped and supported me from a distance while I was gone, taking care of my son, daughter, and Orange.
